Music In Video Games

Video game music is great, most people who play video games do not even realize how much the music makes a difference, just like in a movie/TV show music is used to set the mood, its the same in video games as well.  Most video game music is made specifically for games, for example the Battlefield entrance music, and Mario NES music, all made specifically for the game.  The first time I realized how important music was  in video games, was when I was playing Super Mario Bros for the NES a long time ago, the music was very basic, but did fit the game well and it was very catchy, I still remember the music parts for the bosses and levels.  The cool thing about video game music is that it started out very basic, such as the Super Mario Bros music, and when games got better, better technology, the music started getting better and better, and now it is CD quality music, no more MIDI music. It is now common to hear orchestral music now in video games.  Most people when they play a game, they don’t think about the music playing, just like I never did, but in fact, that music they hear playing could of taken a long time to make, as long as even the game!  Take for example Halo, which has specific music for each levels, and parts in the game, and the music is original.  This has now opened up a market for selling the music from games on CD’s.

What made be write about this, was from putting into Youtube, Battlefield theme, and a symphony appeared, with lots of people in attendance, the video was actually filmed by people who go to these symphony’s.  If I would of never searched that in Youtube, I would of never know there was this!  When I looked on to the right side for more video’s more symphony music of video games appeared, such as for Mario, Zelda, Halo, Metal Gear Solid, and more, all filmed by people who went to these symphony concerts.  I did a little bit more research and found out that there is a symphony group who is dedicated to playing just video game music, http://www.play-symphony.com/ They are called PLAY! and they only play video game music and play concerts worldwide, I think they sell out quickly, looking at the videos on Youtube, it seemed like it was sold out. It’s really neat hearing the music from the video game being played in this manner, Hopefully one day they will come to my city.

Here is a history of video game music http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game_music
