How To Use A Proxy

This is how a proxy works, The proxy server is your hidden IP address, only the Proxy server knows your IP address, but any other site you visit only see's the proxy address
The Internet use to be a place where the whole world could access sites from everywhere and anywhere around the world, now ISP’s, Governments, web sites, and the servers are restricting people from accessing many web sites on the Internet. This is becoming a problem, since the Internet, which was made so anyone could get information on anything is now restricted on where they can go, most people do not even realise they are blocked from many web sites, since many search engines do not even search the entire web, since they use your IP address, and they can find exactly where you are from, and target your searches to only that location, such as only North American sites, and no foreign sites.
An IP address is a unique identifier of your computer on the Internet, think of it as the address of your home, with an IP address many things can be done such as finding out your country, city, ISP. The ISP of course knows exactly your address since they have the records of the IP, especially if you are on cable/DLS Internet, which your IP is always the same and never changes. So never think you are anonymous on the Internet, and you can do anything you want, your IP is your address. Every time you visit a site, no matter what site it is, it reads your IP address, and usually it logs it, and it allows the owner of the site to view your IP with information of where your from, most of time this is useless information, and you do not have to worry about it, but if it ends up in the wrong hands, or say you are doing something illegal on the Internet, you will most likely be tracked, and also when running a IP through a WHOIS, it gives you information, and even usually an email for the ISP usually abuse@ISPnamehere.com, which anybody can send an email to with your IP, say for example you are spamming, and someone runs your IP through a search, it gives them the ISP abuse email, they send logs in and the ISP takes matters to it’s hands, usually ending up in service termination, since ISP’s do not tolerate spam in anyway.
IP proxies is a great thing, it hides your IP address, you basically are using someone else’s IP, it can be anyone’s IP in the world, the advantage of this is you can access those web sites that are blocked, it allows you to access information freely, some countries do not block web sites, and some do. For example Youtube is blocked in a few countries already, but still accessible through a proxy. The major issue with using a proxy is that, your information is being sent through another IP, which can log what you are doing, they can specifically know what websites you are accessing. I would never use a password/username or try to login to anything important using a proxy since of course they could easily find out that information. A proxy is a computer that will take your request from you and forward them to a website on your behalf then it will receive pages and pictures from the site and forward them to you, that is why I would never input any information on the web browser when using a proxy. Proxies are also used for security since your IP is hidden, so it can be great way of surfing a bit more safer online, since if a hacker tries to hack you through your IP address, he would just be hacking the proxy not you. The worst thing about proxies is spam and hackers, most spammers and hackers use proxies to hide themselves on the Internet, and even if they get banned from a web site, or a hacker does damage, it is very difficult to track them / ban them from a site. A spammer would just change their IP if they got banned from a site very easily, which is a problem. I will describe how to use a proxy below, it is very simple to use a proxy, the only difficult part is find one that works, many of them go down quickly or don’t work, and you do not need any programs to use proxies, so do not waste your money on proxy programs.
How to use a proxy using Firefox web browser
Step 1
Use Google to find a proxy list, type in Google free proxy list or use this one http://www.proxy4free.com/page1.html This is the part that takes a little bit of time, finding a proxy that works, don’t be alarmed if the proxy you add doesn’t work, just try a new one, just repeat these steps over again.
Step 2
Choose an IP address from the list, also take note of the port number
Step 3
In Firefox, look at the top menu, where you see Tools, click Options. Shortcut Command: ALT T and ALT O
Click on Advanced tab
Step 4
Click on the Network tab and the click Settings button under Connection. In Connection Settings window, click manual proxy configuration, Now enter the IP address in HTTP Proxy field and in the check-box tick Use this proxy server for all protocols. Click Apply and then check your IP address here http://www.whatismyip.com/ The IP shown on the site should be the one that you entered into your proxy field, if not it did not work, and re-do the steps.
How to use a proxy in Internet Explorer

See Step 1 above from the Firefox instructions
Step 2

Step 3
In the Local Area Network (LAN) Settings window, check Use a proxy server for your LAN
In the same window fill in the Address and Port from the proxy list
Press Ok and Ok and the proxy should work
Step 4
Check your IP at http://www.whatismyip.com/
How to use a proxy in Google Chrome
Step 1
Go to Options located top right side, click on under the hood tab, click on change proxy setting
If you use a proxy in Internet Explorer already Google chrome will use that proxy
How to use a proxy in mIRC (IRC – Internet Relay Chat)
Step 1
To use a proxy in mIRC and IRC the proxy needs to be a SOCKS 5 proxy, so the ones from the list before will not work, so you will need to search in Google Socks 5 Proxies or get one from this list http://www.aliveproxy.com/socks5-list/
Step 2
Go into Tools then Options go to Firewall Firewall Support drop down select Both under Protocol menu select Socks5 Under host name put in the Proxy IP and Port and click Ok and connect.
As you can see proxies are easy to use and not difficult at all to configure, the only hard part is finding one that works, I have also just recently noticed from comments on this site there are now ways of just using a web site to hide your IP, it does work. One of them is http://www.heavymist.com/ Also take note that using a proxy can be slow, say for example if you are using a proxy from China, it can take awhile for web pages to load.
