Old games such as Age of Empires II. are still being played online, ever since the MSN Gaming Zone closed in 2006.  MSN Gaming Zone supported many classics’s and it was pretty much the only way you could play those games, some of them had the availability to join through IP addresses, but that was not effective, since you couldn’t really get big games going on.  But since that closing there has been a new service that is almost like the MSN Gaming Zone, it is called IGZ, International Gaming Zones, http://www.igzones.com/ They did a great job of addressing this problem. As you can see they have a lot of people playing on there service, it works almost exactly like MSN Gaming zone, and even better, they have included anti-cheat on some of there games. Some of those old games are classics, and still very popular today, most of those games have won game of the year, and many high ratings on gaming review websites in the past, even more higher than some newer games that are out now. There is also other places that host these old games as well, such as GameRanger, http://www.gameranger.com/ The great thing about these 2 places, is that it offers people a place to play the games they enjoyed back then, on the MSN Gaming Zone. A lot of newer games don’t have these communities, just in game server browsers, which take the fun out of the game. If you never have been on the MSN Gaming Zone, it was basically a main area where everyone would gather, with a chat, then gaming lobbies where people would click to join them, and they could see what game was being played, and also it had a friends list similar to what Steam is now.  If you ever played any of these  games, and still have your old disc hanging around, give it a try.  The great thing about these games are that they require low requirements to play, and that they are cheap now, but at the same time you might run into problems on a new computer running Windows Vista 64bit, but IGZ has support forums to answer your questions.
