This article does not promote the download of illegal software, movies and music, this is just an opinion.

torrent

Torrent’s, you might wonder what they are, or you may already know, and are using it.  Basically what a torrent is a file that is downloaded with a program called Bit Torrent, a program that was I believe the first at the time for Torrents. http://www.bittorrent.com/ used by people to download files. One of the greatest things of Bit Torrent was that it didn’t need to run on a expensive server or a single user to transfer a file,  at the time bandwidth was expensive.   I remember using Napster when it came out, mostly everyone used it to transfer illegal music mp3′s then it got shut down, but the way Napster worked one single user would host the file and you download from them.  Napster was shut down by the court for illegal file sharing, it was on every news station at the time, now they run a business like Itunes, they sell music legally by artists.  The difference between Napster and Torrents is that everyone hosts a little bit of information, the people who download the file also upload the file, so everyone is contributing to the download, not just a single user or server, so you can see why its great for example sending the Wedding video to family and friends overseas through the Internet, the file will be much faster the download.  Of course illegal files would be shared using this technology, people like free stuff, its a fact.

You have probably seen in the media that piratebay is in court and portrayed as a evil company promoting the download of illegal materials, but the fact is that piratebay is just a search engine, they do not host any files on there server, the people, you do who participate it, not them, they just make it easier to find those files.  For example, when you put in a search engine some program name download, you will most likely get the result of that program direct link or even link’s to those sites such as piratebay, or even direct links to private hosts that people share these files or cracks.  So if pirate bay is at fault so should other search engines for supplying the ability to search in them for illegal software as well.  The problem with this is that the creators of the music or movies, or applications will loose money with this, of course they will, but I guess it’s the risk they have to take, some of them obviously charge to much as well.  The courts have sued piratebay, but piratebay is a small egg in the basket, there are many other sites around and also, they fail to see that, they are not the ones, its the Torrent software, and most importantly the billions of people around the world downloading/uploading these files.  Internet service providers have already tried to combat this, by reducing the speed of people’s downloads, but also, the Internet service providers know that the majority of there customers who buy there top tier speeds are people who download, if these files did not exist the majority of them would not be paying that 25MB cable, what need would they have for it, gaming doesn’t require that much speed, and also ISP’s do not allow people to host their own servers.  So basically, what I am saying is that illegal downloading will always exist in this world, the people are the ones that do it, the billions around the world, if you stop it those billions of people that is probably more than half of the Internet.  Also if they sue all the company’s that host these search sites, and torrenting, they will find other ways, there is always the old way of IRC,  and newsgroups, people will always find a way just like almost every program in the world has a crack.  So that is why I think that those companies suing sites like piratebay will never succeed, at stopping it, there is basically no way, unless the Internet is shut down.

Another thing that I find funny is how the media portrays it all, http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/7921933.stm

The Pirate Bay hosts thousands of links to so-called torrent files, which allow for movies, TV programmes and applications to be shared online.

The piratebay does not host the files, they only are a search engine for people that are hosting files, the billions of people around the world are the people who host the files.
If you ever went to piratebay’s website you would see its a simple site that looks like google with a search box, it doesn’t promote any piracy at all on their front page.  Actually, search engines like google are the best place’s to find torrent’s, put torrents in google and you will find all the torrent websites.

Another thing I’d like to say is how most people like to try a program out or listen to a couple songs before buying it, it is proven that people want to see what they get before paying it, which sometimes leads to more sales for that company. Youtube basically works that way, a lot of people, including myself look up a certain song up on Youtube to hear it, are we paying money to hear that song? no, so I guess that should be illegal as well, since you can basically listen to an entire music CD on youtube, without buying it, and now with current cell phone technology with unlimited bandwidth you have a full record CD streamed to your phone, even with video.

So this is just my view on piracy, that it will never end even though its wrong, it will always exist because of people around the world, and also the WWW (World Wide Web) is not what it use to be a long time ago, it is becoming to be now regulated by the government heavily on what can happen and what sites you can visit, many times on youtube, I have got the message, this video is not displayed in your region, but that is another article. Leave a comment I want to see what your opinion is on this. It seems like piratebay is shut down, I believe more of these sites will be shut down in the future, will this stop piracy? probably not.
